Sylmar, California

Rich in the history of olive groves first planted by 18th century Spanish missionaries, Sylmars beginnings were intertwined with the present community and now city of San Fernando and the San Fernando Mission.

Olive groves helped create a solid beginning of business and commerce for this northernmost Los Angeles community, located adjacent to the sloping hills of the San Gabriel Mountains to the North and the Los Angeles National Forest.

Significant to its history is the building of the Los Angeles Aqueduct by water pioneer William Mulholland, who was considered to be responsible for harnessing water from the Colorado River for the growing population in the early days of Los Angeles.

William Mulholland was said to have stood on the aqueduct site and thought to have said that the wind caused the green and silver leaves of the olive farms to look like glorious ocean waves against the mountains.  The name Sylmar means Sea of Trees.  The area once boasted the largest olive groves in the world.

Freeway close to all, Sylmar is the Northernmost neighborhood of the City of Los Angeles.  It is accessible from Interstate 5 (Golden State freeway), Interstate 210 (Foothill Freeway), State Hwy 14 (Antelope Valley freeway), and proximal to the 405 (San Diego freeway) and the 118 (Simi Valleyfreeway).   Sylmar is roughly bounded by the Interstate 5 on the West, San Gabriel mountains on the North and East, the city of San Fernando on the South, and Granada Hills to the West.

Since the year 2000, the population has grown 5.4% in the zip code 91342. The population density is 543 residents per square mile.  The median age is 31 years, and median income is approximately $55,317.  Weather:  January average temperature is 43 F, July average temperature is 93 F.  Sunny days: 286, Precipitation days: 39, with 20 of rainfall annually. Sylmar is said to be one area in the Los Angeles basin to be relatively smog free, due to occasional lively winds along the foothills.

With a variety of sized homes from which to choose, many large lots, ranches and equestrian horse properties, Sylmar is a Los Angeles community that is very family oriented and still retains a country feel and atmosphere.  It is a good place to raise a family, quiet and peaceful.

Sylmar is home to one of the largest L.A. county parks; El Cariso Park offers many community activities for youth and seniors, as well as walking trails, sports facilities and recreation.  Directly adjacent is the beautiful and very popular El Cariso Golf Course and Cascades Golf course.

Stetson Ranch Equestrian Park is located just before the mountains and adjacent to the Los Angeles Forest (1 of only 2 equestrian parks in the City ofLos Angeles), with wonderful horse riding trails.
